Worldwide the orchid family is very large and is found predominately in the tropics.  The flowering stems are usually stout.  The complex flowers are distinctive.  They have an irregualr shape and are usually scented.  3 sepals and 3 petals.  The lower one forms a lip or pouch which may be inflated or have a hollow piece that sticks out (spur).  The leaves usually alternate but can be opposite with parallel veins.
