* Note: This is a highly variable species which forms dense mats like a cushion giving rise to one of its common names. A species similar in appearance is Douglasia gormanii from the primrose family. It also has a 5 petaled bright pink flower found in a similar habitat. Members of the primrose family only have 5 stamens while the members of the pink family of which moss campion is a member have 10 stamens. The leaves are also different.

* Stem: From woody roots and thickened branched stem base. Stems short 1/2" tall with densely crowded branches.

* Flower: The moss like mats are covered with small light pink to rose-red flowers. 5 petals, aromatic like lilac. Petals joined at base in the shape of a tube and spread outward at right angles from the tube (slaverform).

* Leaves: Tiny, narrow, tough, leathery, flat and about 1/2" long, pointed. They form the “moss like” mats and persist for many years.

* Habitat: Sandy, dry or rocky soils on ridges to 6600' in alpine situations throughout much of Alaska. They can be pressed flat over a rock with their woody, long taproot tucked into a crevice. Extremely variable.
